Good Deal Box Summer 2009

New Offering
Figure Drawing
Sherrie McGraw
June 22 - 26, 2009
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
$799

Figure Drawing

Drawing reveals an artist’s depth of understanding, thus good drawing skills are the  indispensable foundation of an art student. However, good drawing is not “copied correctness.” It requires selective seeing because relevant information is not apparent, it must be learned. Once the students begin to “see” correctly, the world becomes a rich source of structure, symmetry, planes and dimension.
In this workshop, students discover gesture drawing as a distillation of what the model is doing and feel the joy of reducing reality to its simplest forms. Students also will use longer poses to study the figure in more depth. All skill levels are welcome.

New Offering
Intensive Classical Life Drawing
for the Figurative Artist

Jon deMartin
August 3 - 7, 2009
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
$700

The study and practice of drawing aims to develop an understanding of the abstractions, geometry and structures in nature. Students develop concepts based on observation and the study of theoretical and historical references.
The first half of each session is dedicated to short-pose drawing. The objective is to seize the figure quickly to capture the pose's rhythmic action and to acquire knowledge of its construction. The second half of the session is a long-pose drawing that carries over several weeks. The objective: make a thorough study of the model’s character by observing the shape and value gradations. Students analyze the two approaches and why they are necessary for an understanding of the figure.

Form Painting

Learn the principles essential to transform abstract flat shapes into fully dimensional forms and create a sense of light on the figure. Students concentrate on painting the figure with a full range of values and developing the ability to make accurate value calibrations. The focus is on structure, anatomy, proportion, light direction, edge conditions, abstract movements through the figure, composition and an understanding of form on the figure.
These concepts are executed through an application of opaque and semi-opaque paint in the light and shadow areas. This also enables the student to develop painting skills such as scumbling, feathering, and texture. Control of the paint is a priority and is essential to achieving required goals.

Kim(detail) by Stephen Early Oil on LIne

This workshop is for experienced, advanced painters – both those who have attended Studio Incamminati and for newcomers. Students review fundamental concepts of study with experienced instructors who offer personal instruction and guidance through all stages of developing a painting.
The first two days focus on shorter studies including grisaille, “duotone” and color study. The third day begins two eight-day poses: a morning figure pose and a partially clothed afternoon pose suitable for figure or portrait. Students begin this long pose by preparatory problem solving and learning to “block in” a painting with value and color. The long pose gives the opportunity to further develop a painting by combining and refining the basic methods of study.
Students are taught to understand the importance of relating basic planes of value and relating the main color masses as well as how to build on these fundamentals  through the stages of a painting.  Instructors also emphasize understanding the effects of light on form and modeling values with color as the students progress from strong “block-in” to developing specific areas of the painting.
Concepts addressed during the day are complemented by evening instructor demonstrations, guest lecturers and discussions.
An evening demonstration by Nelson Shanks, as well as a dinner at his estate and a visit to his private studio, give students the chance to view his works in progress and ask questions.

Color Study: Still Life
and Figure Painting

July 6 - 10
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
$299

Color study is an exhilarating method of learning to see and understand color as the effect of light on form. Inspired by the work of the Impressionists and U.S. artist Henry Hensche, students learn to see beyond an object’s local color and understand how light source influences how we see color.
Students learn to see light and shadow masses as individual colors and to perfect color in the shadows. As skills develop, increasingly complex setups progress to basic color studies of the human figure. Students also learn how to develop a still life painting beginning with the color study approach.
