Dream Week of events features Shanks, Silverman and Thompson

Award-winning artist Dan Thompson , famed portraitist Burton Silverman and Studio Incamminati co-founder and artistic director Nelson Shanks are appearing in separate, special events open to the public during the week of August 24.
All three events are included for students who register for the Advanced Portrait Workshop, August 18 - August 29.

Award-winning artist Dan Thompson presents keys
to crafting an effective visual strategy

   This painting demonstration visually addresses concepts of stacking or combining principles as the basis of crafting a consistent, effective, fluid and individual strategy of visual expression.  During model breaks at the four-hour head and shoulders portrait session, Thompson also will answer audience questions.
   An accomplished instructor who has taught classes internationally, Thompson's work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums. Among his awards are Grand Prize for Best of Show in the, American Society of Portrait Artist's International Portrait Competition and Second Place in the Figurative Category in the Art Renewal Center's International ARC Salon.

Burt Silverman

Burton Silverman explores the future of realism
and its impact on the portrait world

   Celebrated artist and educator Burton Silverman will discuss the many and varied attributes of realism in portraiture and its impact on collectors as well as the audience that commissions portraits.
        Silverman offers his insight into current modes of representation and examine the aesthetic underpinnings of beauty and craft. He will also address the recent emphasis on photographic naturalism and classical academic revivalism.
        Silverman has exhibited in galleries and museums since 1956 including solo shows in  New York, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, the Mexico City Museum of Art  and  the Royal Academy of Art in London. He has won numerous prizes and awards and in 2002 received an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. In 2004, he was awarded the Gold Medal from the National Portrait Society for distinguished accomplishments in the arts.

Nelson Shanks painting demonstration

       Nelson Shanks, founder and artistic director of Studio Incamminati, conducts a live painting demonstration. World renowned for capturing the complex nature of realist art, his notable commissions include Diana, Princess of Wales, presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton and His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Other significant commissions include Luciano Pavarotti for the Metropolitan Opera, Mstislav Rostropovich for the Kennedy Center, and Denyce Graves for the National Portrait Gallery.
       His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Kensington Palace in London, and Fortezza Firmafede in Sarzana, Italy.

Local artists welcome at live-model sessions Sundays, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

  • Draw or paint from a live model in a studio setting amid professional artists.
  • Bring your own art supplies. Easel and taboret are provided.
  • $10 per each 3-hour session.
  • Purchase a 10-week discount card and save! Pay for 10 weeks in advance for $70 (that’s only $7 per day). Your card is punched each visit and is valid for up to 10 visits, at your convenience. Cards may be shared and do not expire.
  • Free parking available across the street.
  • Because of scheduling conflicts, holidays and other conditions, Open Studio sessions will NOT be held on:
